Scientific Publications

The Silti-Butajera Geopark has been the focus of several scientific publications that document its geological, geothermal, and geoheritage significance:

  • A notable study on the Butajira geothermal prospect conducted geophysical surveys (including magnetotelluric and transient electromagnetic methods) to assess subsurface resistivity and geothermal potential, reflecting on the area's geological and geothermal importance (Kebede Mengesha Negatu, 2021).

  • Scientific research has analyzed the petrogenesis of Quaternary basaltic rocks in the Butajira-Kibet area, focusing on major and trace element geochemistry to understand the volcanism within the extensional tectonic regime of the Main Ethiopian Rift (Megerssa et al., 2023).

  • An inventory of key geosites in the Butajira Volcanic Field was compiled, evaluating volcanic heritage sites for their tourist potential and geoconservation needs to support the establishment of Ethiopia’s first geopark (Megeressa et al., 2018; 2023).

  • Broader scientific documentation also includes studies on rift basin development, volcanic activity chronology, and structural geology in the Main Ethiopian Rift, contextualizing the Silti-Butajera area within regional tectonic and volcanic processes.

Together, these publications provide a robust scientific foundation for the geopark’s development, emphasizing its geological uniqueness, geothermal potential, and importance for geotourism and conservation.
